Friends Repair Osprey Nest Platform

A volunteer team from the Friends of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge recently responded to shore-up a leaning osprey nest platform. The nest site is in the marsh overlooking the Great River/Jehu Pond estuary in Mashpee. It was reported by a nearby homeowner, and the Friends quickly assembled a team to tackle the repair. On January 13, 2022, FMNWR Directors Neil Barkin, Nancy Church, Glenn Davis and MaryKay Fox were able to take advantage of a perfect window of relatively mild January weather and low tide. With a mix of ingenuity, teamwork, brute strength and a bit of luck, we were able to successfully straighten the post, then reinforce the supporting structures. A job well done in time for when the birds return in March. This iconic nest is well known to local boaters, kayakers, residents and visitors, who observe the osprey living and breeding in their natural environment. We know the osprey will appreciate our efforts in securing their home in the years ahead!
